What is Retirement Services?

Retirement Services is a therapeutic community service designed to enhance the quality of life of older adults with developmental disabilities. The goals of Retirement Services are to avoid forced retirement and functional decline for older adults with DD, establish a retirement culture for persons with DD, expand the options for inclusive community participation, increase the community’s capacity to serve older adults with DD, and maximize limited resources.

Why is Retirement Services needed?

Wake County Human Services has a significant number of persons with developmental disabilities waiting for services. One area of high demand is vocational services. One strategy to providing vocational opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities is to assist older adults nearing retirement who are presently involved in employment or ADVP services to transition from these services to supported retirement and community involvement. This would allow other individuals on the waiting list to access employment services.

Some older adults with developmental disabilities may no longer be interested in working or may be experiencing health changes while other older adults may have not yet prepared for their retirement. Many of these older adults have not established strong community connections that will support involvement in inclusive community activities in their retirement. Staff, direct care providers and family members may be unsure how to promote these connections, opportunities, or the skills necessary to support a meaningful and quality retirement.

Who is Supporting Retirement Services?

Retirement Services is funded by Wake County Human Services and coordinated through The Arc of Wake County.

What are the potential outcomes of Retirement Services?

Individual participant outcomes may include improved quality of life, increased self-confidence, more varied recreation interests and skills, ability to follow-through on self-selected choices, expanded social network and resources, ability to interact effectively and with ease in various social situations, ability to use community resources and the establishment of meaningful and productive routines.

Agency outcomes will include a reduction of older adults with developmental disabilities on the waiting list for employment services and opening up vocational opportunities for other adults with developmental disabilities. The community’s capacity to meet the service and support needs of older adults with developmental disabilities will increase resulting in the need for fewer segregated services.
