The Arc of Wake County

Triangle United Way

People We Are, a group of self-advocates with developmental disabilities, is a program of The Arc of Wake County. People We Are believes we should develop the skills to speak for ourselves in matters of public policy, employment and housing. We discuss the rights, issues and needs of people with developmental disabilities.

We discuss ways to contribute to the community, invite speakers to our meetings, and inform members of services and opportunities that are available in the community. Leadership development is an important part of our goals.

Every year we are active participants in the North Carolina State Self-Advocacy Conference. Some of our members have served on the state steering committee for the Self-Advocacy Conference.

We emphasize standing up for ourselves, but we also have fun. Building new friendships is a part of People We Are. We plan social get-togethers several times a year. We enjoy doing different things like eating out, bowling, and going to the movies.

The Arc of Wake County

Membership and meetings are open to all Wake County residents. People We Are collect nominal dues each meeting to help pay for. Meetings are the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.
